Herbal Insider - Turmeric for Relief!

Turmeric (Curcuma longa)

A life of adventure, not all of them wisely planned, has left me with an extraordinary number of broken bones. Feet, legs, ribs, arms, fingers, skull...but at least I also have great stories! The lingering pain from these was affecting the quality of my life until I started adding turmeric to my daily take. Its anti-inflammatory powers are well known and helped me move easily again, but it helps in other ways, too.

Medicinal Properties

  1. Anti-Inflammatory Effects
Turmeric is widely celebrated for its potent anti-inflammatory properties, primarily attributed to its active compound, curcumin. Research shows that curcumin inhibits inflammatory pathways, making it effective in managing chronic inflammatory conditions like arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, and even cardiovascular diseases. Clinical studies have demonstrated that curcumin can reduce joint pain and stiffness in patients with osteoarthritis, often rivaling the efficacy of over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medications.
  2. Antioxidant and Cellular Protection
Curcumin also serves as a powerful antioxidant, neutralizing free radicals and boosting the activity of the body’s own antioxidant enzymes. This dual action protects cells from oxidative stress, which is linked to aging and the development of chronic diseases such as cancer and neurodegenerative disorders. Studies suggest curcumin may help delay or mitigate the effects of conditions like Alzheimer’s disease by reducing oxidative damage and amyloid plaque buildup in the brain.
  3. Support for Digestive Health
Turmeric has long been used to promote digestive health. Curcumin stimulates bile production, aiding in fat digestion and improving gut health. It also exhibits protective effects on the stomach lining, reducing the risk of ulcers. Research has indicated that turmeric can alleviate symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and other gastrointestinal conditions, contributing to a healthier digestive system.

Best Preparation Methods

Turmeric is most effective when consumed as a tea, in capsules, or combined with fats and black pepper for improved absorption. Golden milk, a warm beverage made with turmeric powder, milk (or plant-based alternatives), and black pepper, is a traditional and effective way to harness its benefits. I also like powdered turmeric added to my coffee with cream, taken at breakfast of eggs with salt and black pepper.

Warnings and Precautions

While turmeric is generally safe, excessive consumption may lead to gastrointestinal issues, such as nausea or diarrhea. Individuals taking blood-thinning medications or those with gallstones or bile duct obstructions should consult a healthcare provider before using turmeric, as it may exacerbate these conditions. Pregnant women should also moderate turmeric intake to avoid potential uterine stimulation.

My goal is to help you improve your life using the plants & mushrooms which surround us, as well as helping you understand the evolutionary needs of your ancient body. For years I've been studying health issues, and this has led me to what I feel people need the most - improvement and support of their Brain-Gut Axis.

The Brain-Gut Axis is a bidirectional communication network that connects the central nervous system (CNS) with the enteric nervous system (ENS), allowing the brain and the gut to influence each other. This axis plays a crucial role in maintaining gastrointestinal stability, regulating digestion, and modulating immune responses, as well as being involved in emotional and cognitive functions. Disruption of the Brain-Gut Axis has been linked to disorders such as anxiety, depression, and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Recent research suggests that the gut microbiota significantly influences this communication, highlighting its potential role in both neurological and gastrointestinal disorders.

Translation - if your brain and gut aren't working right, nothing will be working right. So, let's get that Axis back into shape with the Brain-Gut Axis Stack!

Thank you for your excellent articles! I learned so much with everything I read. My son just gave me some turmeric. I asked him how to use it. What it was for he didn’t know. He just knew it was good for me and I like things that are good for me.😀🥰
