Protecting the weak is the responsibility of the strong. Strong of mind as well as strong of body!

The Warrior Story

They were the tribe’s strongest, an elite force who worked together protecting their community. To do so required fast reflexes, a brain that could analyze and adjust quickly, and untiring muscles. The tribe’s medicine man understood what they needed and supplied them with a combination of plants and mushrooms daily, keeping the team ready for any battles. This in turn increased the warriors’ confidence and reduced any fear of failure. They knew they were ready for anything.

There may not be a spear in your hand, but modern life still calls for a warrior’s power of endurance and clear thought. If your job or hobbies have you in competition with others then you are a fighter, needing every advantage you can get. Thankfully, the human body hasn’t changed much in the last several thousand years so the plants and mushrooms used in ancient times to keep warriors strong are just as effective today. The fact that you are here proves how tough and powerful your ancestors were!

The Liver Pill’s Components

Milk Thistle Seed Extract: The earliest recorded use of milk thistle for the liver are found in the writings of the Roman Legion physician, pharmacologist, and botanist Pedanius Dioscorides, who wrote the medicinal text De Materia Medica over two thousand years ago. His job was to keep the Roman Legion, one of the strongest fighting forces ever known, ready for battle. His knowledge of this and many other plants had been passed down to him, healer to healer, from the dawn of prehistory. Science has found little better than the extract of compounds referred to as silymarin to treat liver issues even as extreme as mushroom poisoning that targets the liver for quick destruction.

Silymarin: Silybins A&B, silychristin, and silydianin are just some of the complex mixture of flavonolignan molecules collectively referred to as silymarin. Human studies show these compounds stimulate the regrowth of lost liver cells, speed up the liver’s own detoxification mechanisms, inhibit cellular growth of certain cancers including prostate, breast, acute lymphoblastic leukemia, and head/neck tumors.*(1) They also have been found to increase the effectiveness of certain chemotherapy drugs.*(1) Because of the molecular structure of silymarins they may be an antagonist for cytosolic estrogen receptor beta. This may increase estrogen levels in a manner which has been found to help with the memory loss due to Alzheimer’s.*(2) This molecular structure also limits the silymarin’s solubility in water. To be made bioavailable, it needs to be combined with fats and oils.

Flaxseed: Like milk thistle, the earliest signs of flaxseed are from ago along the Mediterranean sea. 30,000 years ago it was being cultivated in the Syrian portion of Fertile Crescent for food, fabric (linen), and to make dye from its small, blue flowers. Because of its many uses it had spread to farming communities throughout Europe 5,000 years ago. Flaxseeds are a great source of dietary fiber, protein, and minerals such as iron, calcium, manganese, thiamin, magnesium, phosphorus, and copper. More importantly, they’re also loaded with the beneficial oil phosphatidylcholine, a subclass of and omega-3 fatty acids that improve your body's absorption of the milk thistle seed compounds.

Phosphatidylcholines: Consisting of two long carbon chains connected to a nitrogen/oxygen/phosphorous moiety, this phospholipid is a major part of cellular membranes inside and on the surface of human cells. More importantly, it can wrap around other long carbon-chain molecules, separating them from each other for increased bioavailability.* Being an omega-3 fatty acid, there are is much research on the powerful supportive properties of this and several other flaxseed oils for the brain, heart, & cardiovascular system, diabetes, and cancer suppression.*(3)

In the brain, flaxseed oils can play a role in the proper pre- and post-natal brain development.*(3) Later on it has been found to help modulate behavior and mood, especially depression, hyperactivity, and poor spatial memory.*(3) If you are stalking an enemy, spatial memory is necessary!

Flaxseed has been shown to lower both systolic and diastolic blood pressure by reducing the amount of harmful buildup of bad lipids and overall inflammation in blood vessels.*(3)

Tumor growth in breast cancers was slowed and potentially even prevented by taking 25g of flaxseed daily.*(3) The lignin found in flaxseed are nonsteroidal phytoestrogens. Once they enter the human digestive system demethylation followed by dehydrogenation occurs converting them into enterolactones. At this stage they enter the blood from the large intestine. Studies have shown increased concentration of enterolactones give a protective effect against breast, colon, prostate, stomach, and lung cancers.*(3)

Rosemary Extract: One weakness of seed oils are their susceptibility to oxidation, reducing their benefits. Normally processed foods with high oil contents have synthetic preservative chemicals such as butylated hydroxytoluene added to stop the oils’ reactions with oxygen. These chemicals were not part of the ancestral medicine man’s kit and we believe they shouldn’t be today, either. Flaxseed does contain its own antioxidants to help prevent change but to truly ensure protection of The Liver Pill’s whole, ground flaxseed from oxidation a potent antioxidant extracted from rosemary has been added to the capsule.*(4) To our knowledge we are the only supplement maker using this natural antioxidant.

Burdock Root: Another ancient plant described by Dioscorides, burdock was initially found wild across Europe and Asia where its long, thick taproots have been used as food and as a source of medicine. Like so many “weeds” it has successfully migrated to and colonized North America. Here, its aspect as a food was lost but it continued to serve herbalists up into the 19th Century in maintaining the different systems of the human body. Active compounds of burdock roots include polysaccharides, and two special lignins called arctiin and arctigenin.

Arctiin & Arctigenin: These multi-phenolic molecules are the focus of burdock root pharmacological powers. While they exert effects across various human organs and systems, the liver is of key interest. Studies have shown these two compounds speed up the overall functioning of the liver in regard to its job of breaking down and removing toxins.* This improved action is accomplished by “decongesting” and reducing inflammation in this critical organ, allowing it to perform as it is supposed to.*(5) The lactic acid produced by muscles during strenuous use is one such waste product and by quickly removing it, muscles don’t fatigue as quickly.

The enzyme PPARG regulates fatty acid storage and glucose metabolism. Burdock root arctiin and arctgenin may down-regulate PPARG, thereby reducing storage fat storage in the body.*(6)

The anti-inflammatory effects of arctiin and arctgenin also show therapeutic effects against infections, certain metabolic disorders, and even on central nervous system issues.*(6) Both chronic and acute inflammation of organs and tissues can lead to cellular degradation. Modulation of the body’s immune/inflammation response by reducing over-production of cytokines is just one of several mechanisms known to arise from arctiin and arctgenin.* These compounds can also affect the body’s nitric oxide levels.*(4) Studies suggest the neuro-protective effects of these compounds can cross the blood-brain barrier, and so can reduce neuron inflammations combined as well as scavenge free radicals inside the brain, offering neuroprotective effects.*

The Brain Pill Components

Lion's Mane Extract: The mushroom Hericium erinaceus aka lion’s mane is found growing wild across many parts of the world. Rather than looking like a traditional toadstool, these fungi resemble a cluster of small, white tubes giving the appearance of a round, albino hedgehog growing off the side of a tree. Although the whole mushroom is edible and unbelievably delicious, when used to maintain mental acuity they were brewed into a simple tea. The earliest records of the mental support offered by these odd fungi can be traced to ancient China. Their technological skills, especially in horseback warfare, were the most advanced on the planet. This required balance, reflexes, and bravery!

β-glucan polysaccharides: This water-soluble class of compounds are the key source of lion’s mane’s power. Studies have shown these polysaccharides are the anti-cancer, immuno-modulating, hypolipidemic, antioxidant, anti-microbial, anti-hypertensive, anti-diabetic, wound healing, and neuro-protective agents of Hericium erianceus.*(1) The potent brain support comes from maintaining and even increasing neural connectivity while also helping clear the brain of damaging compounds, leading to improved spatial and visual memory.*(2) These benefits were found in elderly patients as well as people with Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.*(2) Motor control improved in extremities that had suffered nerve damage.*(2) For consistency The Immune Pill uses a scientifically controlled hot water extraction of lion’s mane mushrooms followed by careful removal of the water. This ensures the concentration of β-glucan polysaccharides in the capsule meets our special requirements to best serve your needs.

Ginkgo Leaf: There’s something special about this ancient tree. Fossil records put it back to 270 million years ago, well before the evolution of humans as well as many other things currently living on the planet. An individual tree can live over 1500 years, as proven by examples grown in Chinese, Korean, and Japanese gardens...cultures who lived by the saying, “It is better to be a warrior in the garden than a gardener in a war.”

Use in traditional Asian medicine goes back much farther than 1500 years. Ginkgo has been used by Asian healers for circulatory disorders, asthma, tinnitus, and vertigo, its main use is for mental/cognitive support such as autism, ADHD, addiction, anxiety, schizophrenia, and dementia.*(3)

Research suggests the neuro-benefits of ginkgo are due to several mechanisms triggered by multiple compounds. Increased blood flow to the brain is one.*(4) Presence of the monoamine oxidase inhibitor kaempferol may also play a role.*(5) Compounds from ginkgo have also been shown to modulate the over-expression of cerebral proteins associated with Alzheimer’s.*(6) Whatever the actual chemistry may be, the end result has been known and used for a long, long time.

Sage: The history of Salvia officinalis reaches back to pre-Roman times along the Mediterranean Sea. By the times the Roman culture appeared it already was known as the “holy herb” used as a local anesthetic of the skin, a diuretic, and to stop bleeding. The ancient philosopher/doctors Dioscorides, Pliny, and Galen all wrote of its powers. Because of the rich flavor of sage’s compounds such as cineole, borneol, thujone, tannic acid, oleic acid, ursonic acid, ursolic acid, carnosol, carnosic acid, fumaric acid, chlorogenic acid, caffeic acid, niacin, nicotinamide, flavones,  and flavonoid glycosides its usage moved from healer to the cook…and to those who required a sharp mind.

Research has shown sage assists with attention, memory, judgment and evaluation, reasoning, problem solving and decision making through a large diversity of mechanisms.*(7) Compounds exert cholinergic, neurotrophic, anti-inflammatory, antidepressant, anxiolytic, antioxidant effects on the brain as well as reducing the damage done by amyloid-β peptide clusters of Alzheimer’s.*(4)

The mixture of phenolic acid and flavoids , rosmarinic acid, salvianolic acid, carnosic acid, and quercetin work together to return memory functions in those showing signs of Alzheimer’s by slowing the growth of amyloid-β peptide clusters which results in a reduction of the damaging compounds these clusters produce.*(7)

Acetylcholine is a primary neurotransmitter of the cholinergic signaling system in the brain. This system plays a large role in mood, memory, and general motivation. The enzyme AChE breaks down acetylcholine. When AChE becomes overexpressed the availability of acetylcholine drops below what is necessary for normal cognitive functions. Rosmarinic acid, carnosic acid, and quercetin inhibit the action of AChE, maintaining normal levels of acetylcholine.*(7)

Neurotrophins are the general name for the compounds that regulate neuron development, functioning, adaptability, and survival. In other words, they build and maintain the amazing computer circuitry of your brain. Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is a compound in the brain found to assist the proper growth and functioning of neurons. Reduced levels of BDNF result in impaired metal ability. The rosmarinic acid in sage increases BDNF levels back to operational levels.*(7)

Brain inflammations have been found to correspond with assorted neurological impairments including ADHD, reduced motor control, depression, and acute phase psychosis. The 1,8-cineole, camphor, carnosol, and carnosic acids found in sage reduces these inflammations, usually through reduction of cytokine expression.*(7)

Rosmarinic and caffeic acids, also both display antidepressant and antianxiety activity. All that is known about the actual mechanisms of these plant compounds is that they don’t function like the monoamine oxidase inhibitors created in the lab.*(7)

Together, the combination of lion’s man mushroom, ginko, and sage in The Brain Pill work across a diversity of mechanisms to maintain your cognitive abilities. The doses of the individual components were set to give your body enough of the plants & mushroom necessary for the proper effect without over or under-representation. Ancient wisdom and modern science come together, unearthing the ancestral secrets used to maintain the tribe’s health. You are part of this tribe!
